A Novel Route to Prepare Fast-responding and Temperature Sensitive Bulk Hydrogels by Introducing Microgel Particles
A novel route, via introducing microgel particles with a hydrodynamic diameter of below 150nm, was adopted to prepare fast-responding bulk hydrogels. The microgels with much lower hydrodynamic diameter were synthesized by dropping reactive monomer aqueous solution into initiator solution in the absence of surfactant, which is different with conventional batch method by injecting initiator solution into monomer aqueous solution. The bulk hydrogels were synthesized by the crosslinking of N- isopropylacrylamide monomer with incorporation of microgel particles. The polymer obtained had desired nano-structure but was bulk and the particle size of the microgels Was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Deswelling ratio and thermal responsibility of bulk hydrogels with or without microgel particles were compared. The results show that an introduction of microgel particles in the bulk hydrogels provided faster hydrogel swelling.
