Preparation of Cellulose Acetate (CA)/Polyurethane (PU) Composite Nanofiber by Electrospinning

CA/PU composite nanofibers were obtained through electrospinning of CA/PU in 2:1 N, N- dimethylacetamidc (DMAc): acetone mixture solvent. The nanofiber structure and morphology were affected by factors such as the total polymer concentration, molecular weight of CA and component ratio in the binary mixtures. PU could facilitate the electrospinning of CA at lower concentration down to 6 wt%. Depending on the spinning solution parameter, nanofibers in the forms of beaded fiber, spindle-like fiber and bead-free fiber were generated. The diameter of CA/PU nanofibers and tensile strength of CA/PU nanofibrous membrane increased with the increasing of PU content in the composite nanofiber. Maximum Youngs modulus at 320MPa was achieved for CA/PU=20/80 nanofibrous membrane. DSC and FTIR analysis confirmed that component CA and PU were partially miscible in the composite nanofiber. The selective removal of one component by washing with proper solvent could maintain the fiber morphology but reduce the fiber size, suggesting CA/PU composite fibers showed a co-continuous structure.
