Effects of pH on Electrospun Fibers from Regenerated Silk Fibroin Aqueous Solutions
In this study, regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) aqueous solutions with concentrations similar to the natural dope of silkworm were prepared. The pH values of the solutions were adjusted from 6.9 to 5.2 by mimicing the different divisions of silkworms gland. SF fibers with an average diameter of 700nm were successfully prepared by using electrospinning technique. The conformation of electrospun fibers was characterized by Raman spectroscopy (RS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC), respectively. It was found that electrospun fibers were predominantly random coil/silk Ⅰ conformation, lowering of the pH promoted silk Ⅱ formation in electrospun fibers.
