Synthesis and Characterization of PBA/P (MMA-ITA) Latex with Core/shell Structure
The latex poly (n-butyl acrylate)/ poly (methyl methacrylate-itaconic acid) (PBA/P (MMA-ITA)) with core/ shell structure was synthesized via preemulsion and semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization process. The latex particles were characterized by Transition electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and acid-base titration. The results showed well-defined core/shell structure was formed, in which PBA as the core with an average diameter of 250nm and P (MMA-ITA) as the shell with an average diameter of 290nm. With increasing the amount of the seeds, the average diameter of the particles firstly increased due to the formation of secondary particles, and then decreased according to the normal rule. The P (MMA-ITA) linked onto the surface of core by chemical bonding and physical adsorption. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the latex increased owing to the existence of ITA.
