Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Rapid Responsive Laponite XLS/PNIP AAm Nanocomposite Hydrogels by HCI Solution Posttreatment
A series of high clay content Laponite XLS/poly (N- isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) nanocomposite hydrogels (S-N gels) have been successfully prepared by in-situ ultraviolet (UV) initiated polymerization. It was found that the deswelling rate and swelling ratio of S-N gels could be greatly increased by HCl solution posttreatment. The effects of HCl solution posttreatment on swelling/deswelling behaviors of S-N gels have been investigated. The results indicate that the Laponite XLS/PNIPAAm nanocomposite hydrogels with HCl solution posttreatment (S-N-H gels) exhibit rapid deswelling response rate, much faster than that of any other reported S-N gels. Also, the swelling ratio of S-N-H gels becomes higher with increasing the HCl solution posttreatment time.
