Surface Modification of Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes and Synthesis of Nanotubes-graft-polyacrylonitrile
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were oxidized with concentrated HNO<,3> and H<,2>SO<,4> to introduce carboxylic groups on the surface, then transferred into carbonyl chloride group by reacted with thionyl chloride, and finally reacted with glycol to produce hydroxyl-functionalized MWNTs (MWNT-OH). Then Ce<,4+>/hydroxyl system, which was used as a redox system, initiated acrylonitrile (AN) to prepare MWNT-g-polyacrylonitrile (MWNT-g-PAN) under the acidic condition. The TEM images indicated that the oxidized MWNTs were cut off and less twisted. As-prepared kinds of functionalized MWNTs were characterized with FTIR. The dispersion experiments showed that the dispersion of the MWNT- COOH and MWNT-OH had been improved greatly in water and the MWNT-g-PAN had very good solubility in DMF.
