Effect of Nano-SiO<,2> Filler on Crystal Nucleation and Morphology of Polypropylene
Polymer based nano-composites are a new class of materials exhibiting better property improvements as compared to the polymer-conventional particle composites. Considerable research has been devoted to the understanding of the mechanism of property improvement as well as to the development of physical structure during solidification of the resin in presence of the filler particles. In crystalline polymers structure development during solidification from the melt involves crystallization, and the effect of the filler particles on crystallization behaviour of the matrix polymer is of immense importance in ultimate properties of the composite. In this paper, we present a study of crystallization of polypropylene (PP) in PP/nano-SiO<,2> composite. Crystallization behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), through measurement of nonisothermal crystallization exotherms. Changes produced in the crystallization exotherms were analysed and interpreted for the effect of nano-SiO <,2> filler on nucleation and growth rates, degree of crystallinity and crystal size distribution at varying filler content of the composite. The results are discussed in the light of already reported effects of other conventional fillers to highlight the specific role of the nano-filler. Non-isothermal crystallization data recorded at varying cooling rates were analysed by Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to determine the effect of the nano-particle filler on nucleation and crystallization growth of PP crystallization. The results clearly indicated that the nano-silica filler acted as a effective nucleating agent for PP and the efficiency of nucleating effect varied with the cooling rate. Corresponding changes in crystallization parameters and morphology are also discussed.
