1-5 A Review of the General Galvanizing Industry and the IZA support activities.

The general galvanizing industry has provided corrosion protection for steel products for over a century. Growth rates have been low in the developed world for a number of years. In the developing world, growth rates have been significant and continue to be so with opportunities arising as countries pass critical GDP per capita levels. This paper indicates current growth rates globally and identifies opportunities for growth in the developing world. New legislation and technology is providing added stimulus for growth in developed areas. The IZA has been a major contributor to technology transfer between the developed and developing world since its inception. This activity will be highlighted through examples to provide a stimulus for further industry growth. The industry is moving into a new paradigm as Sustainable Development becomes a key to industrial success. The International Zinc Association (IZA) was established in 1990 with the remit to produce a Sustainable future for the zinc industry. Therefore, it is right that it should be at the forefront of providing the tools required for the industry to adopt the principles of Sustainable Development in the way it behaves and the way it engages the market- place. Some of these developments will be highlighted.
