2-1 Reduction of Coating Thickness Improving Corrosion Resistance of Hot Dip Zn-Ni-V (Ecozinc) Versus Conventional Hot Dip Galvanizing Coatings
A comparative corrosion resistance study has been made of hot dip galvanized and hot dip Zn-Ni-V (ECOZINC) alloy coatings. The coatings were tested by metallographic examination of transverse sections, in were the microstructure and adhesion of the deposit were observed by optical microscopy, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X- rays (EDX) at the LGAI of Barcelona, the CENIM of Madrid and the CORI (Coating Research Institute) of Brussels, qualitative and semi quantitative microprobe analysis at the Scientifical-Technical Services of the University of Barcelona and element distribution analysis with glow discharge optical spectroscopy (GDOS) at the Technology Centre Siegen of Germany. The presence of Ni and V reduces the thickness of intermetallic layers especially in reactive steels but preserves the external pure zinc layer. In order to compare the corrosion resistance salt spray and sulphur dioxide (Kesternich) corrosion test were made. The first six year results of corrosion atmosphere (rural, urban, marine, and industrial environment) that are carrying out in different towns of Catalunya (Spain) are shown. The different coatings were heated in air in order to compare their heat and thermal shock resistance. Through these tests important conclusions about the interest of hot dip Zn-Ni-V (ECOZINC) alloy coatings have been found out: Ecozinc coating thickness is between 30-50 per cent less than conventional galvanizing coating thickness on similar steel. Ecozinc coating has greater corrosion resistance than conventional galvanizing in salt spraying and Kesternich tests. Ecozinc alloy has higher heat resistance than conventional galvanizing.
