2-2 Comparative Study Between the Adherence of Hot Dip Galvanizing Coatings and Zn-Ni-V (Ecozinc) Alloy Coatings in Bending Test

A comparative study between conventional hot dip galvanizing coatings and hot dip Zn-Ni-V (ECOZINC) alloy coatings has been made carrying out bending tests with steel reinforcements. An extensive work has been performed taking into account the following parameters: percentage of Nickel and Vanadium in zinc bath, effect of the temperature and immersion time in the bath. Reinforcing steel bars of lm length and 8, 16 and 25 mm in diameter were galvanized in order to carry out the bending tests. The black steel was of type B- 500S. The microstructure of the galvanizing coating before and after the bend test and the coating defects caused in the bending tests was studied using stereoscopic magnifying lens, optic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The different alloy layers of the galvanizing coatings were revealed using 2% Nital. Bend test showed that the degree and intensity of cracking, and the width of the cracks in the zinc coating, are influenced by the bend radii, the diameters of the bars, the angle of bend and the thickness of the coating. In general, the smaller is the bend radius, the larger will be the cracks. The thicker is the coating, the greater will be the intensity of cracking. The presence of Nickel and Vanadium in zinc bath reduces the thickness and microstructure of the zeta and delta intermetallic layers. For this reason the ECOZINC galvanizing coating is manifested to be more resistant in front of bending test and less damages is detected in the coating
