2-13 Zn-Ni Technology for Controlling Si Reactivity in General Galvanizing -A Look at Current Market Conditions

Abstract Over the past several months, the notable increase in the price of zinc (Zn) has resulted in the desire to minimize Zn usage in galvanizing and has, once again, highlighted the need for controlling reactivity with bath additives such as nickel (Ni). Unfortunately, the coincidental and drastic surge in Ni prices has resulted in the economics of this technology coming under increased scrutiny. While, at first glance, the capitol expense of using Ni suggests that its use may be cost prohibitive, it can be demonstrated that it is possible to control Zn consumption by properly maintaining Ni levels in the galvanizing bath and, even at recent record high Ni market prices, the galvanizer can realize notable cost savings when implementing this technology.
