3-1 Continuous Fastener Galvanizing Technology -- A Customers Perspective
A new hot-dip galvanized coating technology for high quality fasteners has been developed and commercialised. This new process technology is a world first for fasteners and is the first to provide a truly hot-dip galvanized coating at low cost for nails, collated nails, building screws, fasteners for the automotive industry and nuts and bolts for the structural steel and manufacturing industries. The INGALLOY<TM> hot-dip galvanizing process provides a uniquely uniform and controlled coating thickness that ensures a predictable life for fasteners in all environments. The coating thickness, which is controllable by process parameters, can be applied as required, between 20 micrometres and 60 micrometres, allowing the cost of the coating to suit the application, the environment and the life that is required. INGALLOY<TM> coatings closely follow the profile of the steel surface, the inner zinc alloy coating is a thin, hard, abrasion resistant subsurface and the softer outer zinc surface eliminates mechanical damage to the head or shank of the fastener during installation, avoiding corrosion on the head, in the steel or timber, or even in the cavity. The INGALLOY<TM> CFG process uses the latest PLC controlled automation technology in materials handling to minimise labour cost and incorporates closed loop chemical pre-treatment processes that are extremely environmentally friendly. The introduction of new wood preserving chemicals has increased the demand for more corrosion resistant coatings to ensure the life of fasteners is equivalent to the life of the structure and the cladding materials. The under body conditions of motor vehicles also require a coating that has corrosion and abrasion resistance. The new INGALLOY<TM> process also ensures that thread clearances are maintained, to ensure that nuts are always going to fit. The low temperature process ensures that the time/temperature effect on the hardness of high strength fasteners, such as self drilling building screws, is not adversely affected. The new INGALLOYTM technology is a low cost, high quality coating process for fasteners that provides manufacturers with a high performance HDG coating that is highly cost-competitive with lower performance coatings.
