3-2 Surface Segregation of Pb On Spangle of Batch Hot Dip Zn-0.1 Al-0.1 Pb Alloy Coating
The typical spangle on batch hot dip Zn-0.1 Al-0.1 Pb alloy Coating was investigated. The surface morphology, the phase identification and the chemical composition of different regions (smooth, feathery and coarse region) on the spangle were observed and analyzed with SEM, XRD and EDS. The solidification process of the coating was analyzed refered to Zn-Pb phase diagram. The results show that the coating surface, especially for feathery and coarse region, is prominently rich in Pb. Due to the fast dendrite growth of the spangle, a small quantity of liquid Pb- rich phase segregated in solidification process can only intersperse between the second dendrite arms or the third dendrite arms, finally, where the tiny Pb particles (<1.5μm) were precipitated by eutectic reaction. These Pb particles on the coating surface present proper orthohexagonal crystal plane, which is characteristic of Pb single crystal. The reason why the spangle gained under the batch galvanizing condition has aforementioned characters was discussed.
