Minimum Energy Performance Standards for Three Phase Induction Motors in Korea

Since July 2008, three phase induction motors maufactured in or imported into Korea must comply with mandatory Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS). Korean government had carried out the valuntary policies including the certification and the rebate for high efficiency motors since 1993, but the market share of high efficiency motors was no more than 10%. In this reason, in 2004, Korea government decided that MEPS for the three phase induction motors would enforced since 2008. MEPS means the mandatory policy to control the spread of the low efficiency products and promote the manufacturers technical development by setting up and controlling the minimum required efficiency standard. The MEPS has been discussed with the relevant industries to determine the starting time, the scope of induction motors and the test methods etc. for the enforcement in 2008 and it is decided that three phase induction motors over 37kW should comply with the MEPS from 2008 and those under 37kW from 2010. The goal of this policy is to increase the market share of high efficiency induction motor from 10% (2005) to 70% by 2014.
