Industry Participation in the Australian MEPS Motors Program

The key to any programs that require change in our global village and international standards is participation. If collectively, we are not prepared to participate in ideas and thoughts of change, then our campaign will never be effective, conversely if you have a willing and able target group then the winds of change will blow so much stronger. The requirement for change however, particularly in light of the effects of Greenhouse Gas emissions to our Global environment, as well as the international trends pursuing higher levels of energy efficiency, forced Australian governments and industry to work together to create a new policy framework that will ultimately benefit us all. It is with this philosophy in mind that Australia has introduced a worlds best practice approach to the mandated efficiency levels for industrial three phase induction motors. This program, known as MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standards), was started with compulsory minimum efficiency levels in 2001 (MEPS1) and revised in April 2006 (MEPS2). This submission highlights the collective participation in the MEPS process, the issues that were faced by the electric motor industry and that have had to be resolved in Australia in relation to present and future Energy Efficiency programs.
