Optimization of Industrial Motor-Driven Systems Laboratories: Changing Concepts in Engineering

This paper presents the specialized laboratories which are being built in Brazilian public universities by ELETROBRAS, the main Brazilian electrical energy company, by means of PROCEL INDUSTRIA-INDUSTRIAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM. These laboratories will support the activities which are in progress together with Industries State Federations. These activities are aimed in developing and implementing actions to reduce power waste in motor- driven systems comprising electronic adjustable speed drive, electric motors, motor-load coupling, pumps, compressors, fans, exhaust fans and conveyor belts. The Optimization of Industrial Motor-Driven Systems Laboratory is composed by, at least, 4 test benches. In each of them it is possible to simulate several operating conditions of industrial motor systems equipment and components either through high efficiency or standard motors. The test benches have a complete measurement system for electrical, mechanical and ambient parameters. Programmable Logic Controllers provide automation of all experiments. It is also possible to register and to store all data in order to generate detailed written reports at the end of each experiment. All test benches have a supervisory system and are connected through a local data network, linked to a central supervisory system, which permits that each test to be monitored by internet. These laboratories are starting to break the existing gap between the engineering courses in Brazil and are providing a focal point for discussions and studies related to motor-driven systems. As a result, the future engineers will be prepared to elaborate a complete energy audit, approaching all elements of a motor-driven system.
