Systematic Design Approach for a New Series of Ultra-NEMA Premium Copper Rotor Motors

In this paper, we describe the systematic design approach used at Siemens AG to develop a platform for production of a new series of high efficiency die- cast copper rotor motors for general industrial and commercial application. Performance characteristics of motors designed to above NEMA Premium efficiencies for the North American market are described. Design strategies to achieve acceptable starting characteristics and to maintain the high efficiency with the high conductivity rotor conductor material are discussed. The copper rotor manufacturing issues and their solutions are discussed. Results of an independent test program of a 10Hp copper rotor motor conducted by CDA in the U.S. are also presented.
