Power Semiconductor Devices-Key Technology Driver for Power Electronic Systems Controlling Electrical Machines
The drive towards rational use of energy, miniaturization of electrical systems and power management has given impetus to the revolutionary development of power semiconductors and power electronic systems over the last 20 years. In this paper new technologies, advanced device concepts and future system aspect for industrial and home appliance segments focused on motor drive systems are discussed. In these fields of applications there are huge requirements towards system dynamic characteristic, overload capability, ruggedness behavior and reliability. Very new semiconductor components based on Silicon and Silicon Carbide materials have been developed to control the energy flow at extremely high efficiency ratings. Advanced system concepts for household appliances, HVACs and refrigerators are being realized with integrated hybrids consisting of power chips and microelectronics. Multidie high power system solutions have been optimized to drive pumps, fans and traction motors. In this presentation the new trend of power semiconductors and integrated system solutions covering the major fields of motor control will be shown and energy saving potential will be discussed in detail.
