A System Optimization for Components Design and Coupling in Household Motor-Driven Appliances

Taking the lead from their experience in the design of small high efficiency circulating pumps, the authors became convinced that, at least in the short period, better results in terms of cost/benefit ratio can be obtained by the application of system optimization techniques focusing on slight components modifications and coupling, more than by a separate improvement of the single component technology. This paper proposes a system optimization procedure based on the use of the similitude theory as a tool for components choice and re-sizing to match system specifications in term of needed pressure and flow rate. Rapid prototyping techniques have been used to prove the effectiveness of the procedure in the enhancement of the overall efficiency of the system.
