Coating as a Way to Reduce Energy Consumption

This paper brings forward the results from research projects and practical experiences with coating in DK. The projects are characterized by involving pump and ventilator suppliers, suppliers of coating material, the Danish Technological Institute as well as host companies for the field tests. So far Danish industrial companies have used coating for maintenance reasons. In recent years companies have also recognized that coating improves the energy efficiency of the pumps and ventilators. Reduction of the energy consumption is a result of the coating process. Depending on which type of coating material is used the application will have varying increase in efficiency. The project shows that there is potential especially in the area of electricity consumption and maintenance cost. In Denmark there are no coating guidelines, how to chose the right material seen from the perspective to increase efficiency and the life time of the application. The project had gathered information, collected by literature studies, comprises a series of laboratory tests with different types of coating and operation situations and by field tests on site which includes measuring before and after coating. The paper will present the following results: Pumps where there has been measured increase in energy efficiency up to 20%, and significant extension in lifetime. Ventilators increase in energy up to 4% has measured and also here there has been observed prolonged lifetime and reduced maintenance cost. Further more it is relevant to mention the reduced risk for backing of material in the ventilator, which can be very important if the application is a transport ventilator.
