The Deep Cerebellar Nuclei: A Comparative. Study between Thin Transverse Sectional Anatomy and Magnetic Resonance Imaging

PURPOSE: The local-ization of the deep cerebellar nuclei is essential in the clinical research of cerebellum. Our research aimed to discriminate the locations of the nuclei on the thin transverse sections and supply anatomic reference for the functional imaging research of cerebellum and stereotactic operations of the correlative motor disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After MRI examination to exclude organic lesions, one head specimen was selected from three cadavers, then embedded with gelatin and frozen under profound hypothermia. Subsequently, the specimen was sliced into 0.1mm transverse sections along AC-PC line with SKC500 computerized freezing milling machine. The sections were photographed and saved in the computer. Finally, the representative sections were observed meticulously, and equivalent in vivo MR images were selected for comparison with the corresponding sections to predict the location and configuration of the cerebellar nuclei. RESULTS: On the sections, the nuclei were four in number on either side, the dentate nucleus appeared as a convoluted band of gray matter on most sections. The fastigial nucleus was situated to the middle line at the anterior end of the superior vermis, and over the roof of Ⅳ ventricle. The emboliform nucleus lay immediately to the medial side of dentate nucleus, and partly covered its hilus. The globose nucleus was an elongated mass, directed anteroposteriorly, and placed medial to emboliform nucleus. CONCLUSION: The locations of the cerebellar nuclei could be discriminated clearly in our data, which could be seen as an anatomic reference for functional imaging research of cerebellum and clinical applications involving with the nuclei.
