Localization of Adult Cerebral Central Sulcus on the Sagittal Section

Objective: To study the localization of the central sulcus in sagittal MR images. Methods: 30 adult cadaver heads are selected randomly and scanned by MR. After taking the brains from the scanned cadaver heads, we painted different colors on the important cerebral gyri. The preparation of the brain slices in correspondence with MR scan took the line perpendicular to the midpoint of intercommissural line as base one. The sagittal sections of the brain specimen are compared with the corresponding MR images to study localization of the central sulcus in sagittal section in Talairachs coordinate system. Results: (1) The rate of the line perpendicular to the AC-PC line and through the posterior commissure (VPC line) running upwards through the postcentral gyrus is 73%. (2) On the median sagittal plane, the rate of postcentral gyrus appearing anterior to marginal ramus of cingulate sulcus is 100%. (3) On the section on which the marginal ramus of cingulate sulcus disappears, the rate of the line perpendicular to the line linking anterior extremity of hippocampus and inferior border of occipital pole and through posterior extremity of hippocampus running upwards through the central sulcus is 80%. (4) On the section on which the hippocampus disappears, the rate of centraxonial extension line of postcentral gyrus running through transverse temporal gyri is 100%. (5) The rate of postcentral gyms appearing anterior to supramarginal gyrus is 100%. Conclusion: Marginal ramus of cingulate sulcus, posterior extremity of hippocampus, transverse temporal gyri, supramarginal gyrus are the important identification markers of recognizing central sulcus.
