The Study on Sectional Data Acquisition of the Temporal Bone

Objective: To obtain the sectional data of the temporal bone using computerized cryomilling technique. Methods: To collect 2 heads specimens of Chinese adults, after examining the temporal bone with multi-slice CT isotropic scanning, embedding with galetin and freezing under profound hypothermia, the specimens were sliced into 0.1mm continuous sections on transversal plane with the computerized miller, and take photographs with digital camera, save the data in computer, then compare with the same specimens images postprocessed by multi-planar reformation (MPR). Results: 2 head specimens were sliced into 259 and 265 continuous sections of 0.1mm on transversal plane. The thin sections of the temporal bone can clearly delineate the anatomical details of the temporal bone and their relationships, the same specimens images postprocessed by multi- planar reformation (MPR) came to coincidence completely with these sections. Conclusion: The thin sectional images of the temporal bone obtained by computerized milling technique can delineate the anatomical details of the temporal bone and their relationships clearly. This will be the base of three demensional reconstruction of the temporal bone.
