Study on the Method of Combining MM5 with WAsP for the Assessment of Wind Resource

This paper focuses on the method of combining the mesoscale model MM5 with the microscale model WAsP for the purpose of performing local assessment of wind resource more effectively and accurately. Taking the Island of Shangchuan as an experimental site, a comparison is conducted on the wind atlas and annual mean wind speed. The results suggest that the closest simulated site does not necessarily represent the best choice, and it is more reasonable to adopt DEM terrain data used in MM5 while making wind atlas files with the simulated wind data. Furthermore, the method of wind atlas interpolation has the optimistic potential to effectively cut down the uncertainty of the assessment results.
