Research for Wind Turbine Blade Protection against Strong Winter Lightning
Lightning is one of the most popular cause of wind turbine failures in Japan; Especially, Winter Lightning which falls only winter season and only Japan Sea side, is notorious for its severity. Lots of wind turbines are damaged by this lightning every year. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has been made great efforts for several years to identify the characteristic of Winter Lightning to establish the suitable lightning protection for our wind turbines. In this paper, the measured lightning currents which fell to the actual wind turbines in various area of Japan are analyzed. Observed data reveals that IEC61400-24 protection level 1 is not sufficient for Winter Lightning.
