Serious Wind Loss in Cangnan Wind Farm from Typhoon SAOMAI on August 2006

This paper describes the field investigation of serious damage caused by Super Typhoon SAOMAI during its passage across Cangnan Wind Farm on 10 August, 2006. SAOMAI was the biggest landfall Super Typhoon in China last 100 years. Recorded maximum sustained wind speeds (50 meters above ground) were 65.9m/s at Shipeng measuring point 25km north-east of Mazhan, the point of landfall. Gust speeds of up 88.2m/s were registered by the same wind mast. During the two hours of landfall serious wind damage were caused over the south part of Zhejiang province and north part of Fujian province. There were 456 fatalities and 110 missing in Typhoon SAOMAI. In terms of losses, two provinces suffered approximately 19.6 billion RMB of direct economical loss. Cangnan Wind Farm with 28 units from 250kW to 750kW located about 5km north of Mazhan, the landfall point. 17:30 PM of August 10, the eye of Typhoon passed wind farm. Registered maximum gust speed was 81.1m/s (45m above ground). 5 wind turbines collapsed, 33 pieces of blades were broken, two turbine towers and nacelle were serious damaged. Total wind damaged was about 70 million RMB.
