Influence of Blade Forming Process on Aerodynamic Performance of Wind Turbine Rotor and Its Elimination Measures

Due to neglecting the cylindricality of stream- surface of the flow through the wind turbine rotor, the blade template of the rotor is often made a planar one, resulting in distortion of geometric parameters of the blade as well as the aerodynamic characteristics of the rotor, especially to small HAWTs rotors because of their larger curvatures. A three-bladed model wind turbine rotor of 3m in diameter is checked and compared under the condition that curved sections and straight sections are adopted, the results obviously show that the geometric parameters of blade, especially errors of chords and setting angles of blade cross-sections located at r≤0.5R, are resulted and the such aerodynamic characteristics as power coefficient and axial force coefficient of the rotor are also changed. To avoid the mentioned defects to blade fabricating, a method for determination of precise spatial coordinates of points on blade surface in a unified Cartesian coordinate system is presented in the paper, which sets up the relation between the original data of airfoils distributiing in the cylindrical surfaces along the blade axis and the planar blade templates by means of the transformation of coordinate systems to meet the blade aerodynamic performance of design. The elimination measues will be convenient for and beneficial to the blade manufacturers to fabricate aerodynamically correct blade templates.
