Feasibility of Applying a Gasoline HCCI Engine in Production Vehicles
Feasibility of applying a gasoline HCCI engine in production vehicle is discussed. To be applied in production vehicles, an HCCI engine needs to meet two special requirements: Vehicle fuel economy using an HCCI engine should be significantly improved to compensate for the cost increase; and HCCI combustion timing should be Well controlled. A few HCCI engine systems in the literatures are evaluated for their capability to meet the two requirements. The analyses show that some of the HCCI engine systems can meet the two requirements, hence feasible for vehicle application. It is recommended that the effort in developing an HCCI engine should focus on feasible approaches, since not all of the proposed HCCI engine systems in the literatures can meet the requirements for vehicle application.
