EFFECTS OF CO2 IN-CYLINDER INJECTION ON PCCI COMBUSTION
In this study, two fuel injections were used to realize Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) combustion. The first is during Negative Valve Overlap (NVO) period; the second is just before the compression Top Dead Center (TDC). CO<,2> in-cylinder injection was used to reduce the diffusive combustion of the second injected fuel. Engine experiments were conducted to study the effect of CO<,2> injection parameters, including injection timing (SOI<,CO2>) and injection quantity, on PCCI combustion and emissions. The results revealed that, for in-cylinder CO<,2> injection, either advancing SOI<,CO2> or increasing cyclic injection quantity can largely reduce NO<,x> emission with little impairment to the thermal efficiency. Although CO<,2> in-cylinder injection has a weaker effect in reducing NO<,x> emission than intake-pipe injection, it has little effect on smoke.
