Development of GUI-based Software for Control Studies of Batch Reactors
Batch reactors play important roles in chemical industries as they are normally used to produce a wide variety of specialty product. Due to their inherent nonlinearity and complexity, the control of batch reactors is difficult and challenging. In the past years, a number of advanced control methodologies e.g., nonlinear feedforward-feedback control, adaptive control, generic model control (GMC), and model predictive control (MPC), has been proposed with the goal to improve the control performance of the batch reactor. However, since these control algorithms are quite complicated, it is sometime difficult to learn each available control techniques and to compare their control performances. As a result, the aim of this work is to develop the software based on graphical user interface (GUI) in Matlab for simulation studies on the temperature control of a batch reactor where two parallel exothermic reactions occur. The developed software can be employed to analyze the performance of various advanced and conventional control techniques, i.e. GMC and PID, with different tuning parameters. In addition, a state and parameter estimator, i.e. exponential filter and (extended) Kalman filter, is included in the developed software in case of that some state variables are assumed to be unmeasured or parameters are not known exactly.
