Flare Minimization during Plant Startup via Dynamic Simulation

A methodology was developed to minimize flaring during plant startup by using dynamic simulation. This methodology started with setup and validation of steady state and dynamic simulations of the plant. The validated dynamic simulation was used to virtually run and check the plant startup procedures. Modifications of the startup procedures may be recommended to safely start the plant and minimize the flaring. This methodology has been demonstrated in two field tests in Texas, USA, one in Lyondell-Equistar olefin plant OP1 and another one in Huntsman Chemicals olefin plant A3. The dynamic simulation provided an insight into the process dynamic behavior that is not apparent through the use of steady-state simulation or based on past operational experience. This information is crucial for plant startup in order to minimize the flaring. With the cooperation of the operations group, the field tests demonstrated the efficacy of flare minimization during plant startup by using dynamic simulation.
