Control of a methanol concentration for the portable direct methanol fuel cell system
A proper methanol concentration is needed for maximization of the direct methanol fuel cell performance. A pure methanol has to be added to maintain the proper concentration. Concentration sensors are applied to the fuel recirculation process in the fuel cell system. A feedback control using concentration sensor maintained a specific concentration. A feedforward control was executed to maintain the concentration when a disturbance occurs. We ran the unit fuel cell at various conditions to identify relation between methanol consumption rates and other variables. A calculated methanol was supplied to maintain desired concentration at specific temperatures and currents. The feedback control could maintain the methanol concentration with little fluctuation. The feedforward control could maintain desired value at low current load. But it made the offset and it became lager with increasing the rate of the reaction.
