Automatic Synthesis of Optimal Material-Transfer Procedures and Schedules in Batch Processes
Transferring process material from one unit to another via a pipeline network is a basic operation performed routinely in almost every batch chemical plant. Traditionally, the task of conjecturing the needed operation steps and the corresponding schedule is carried out manually on an ad hoc basis. This approach is often time-consuming when applied to an industrial process and, furthermore, the resulting recipe may be errorprone. The aim of this article is thus to develop a systematic strategy to generate the optimal operating procedures and implementation schedules with Petri-net based integer programs. In this study, the system model is constructed with three types of standard Petri-net modules, i.e., the path subnets, the equipment subnets and the process subnets. The patterns of token movements in the system net can be described with the logic constraints used in a corresponding binary integer program (BIP). The detailed operation steps and also the implementation schedule can then be generated by solving this integer program. Additional binary constraints have been incorporated in this BIP to reduce the search space. A number of other well-documented techniques have also been adopted to enhance the solution efficiency, i.e., the heuristic-based method, the multilevel decomposition method (Rodrigues et al., 2000), the hybrid MILP/CP decomposition method (Maravelias and Grossmann, 2004), and the Lagrange relaxation/decomposition method (Wu and Ierapetritou, 2003). Several realistic examples are provided in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed approach.
