Simulated Annealing Approach to the Optimal Synthesis of Distillation Column with Intermediate Heat Exchangers
This paper presents a simulated annealing based approach to the optimal synthesis of distillation column considering intermediate heat exchangers arrangements. The number and the placement locations of intermediate condensers and/or intermediate reboilers within the column, the operating pressure of column, as well as the heat duty of intermediate heat exchangers are treated explicitly as optimization variables. A novel coding procedure is introduced for structure representation and a stage-to-stage design method is developed for cost calculation. With the approach, the problem is formulated as an MINLP (mixed integer nonlinear programming) form and then can be solved with an improved simulated annealing algorithm. Two examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the suggested approach.
