Synthesis of Integrated Water and Energy Systems
A systematic design methodology has been developed in this work for simultaneously optimizing the heat exchanger network (HEN) and water usage and treatment network (WUTN) in any chemical process. A modified state-space representation has been adopted to capture the structural characteristics of the integrated system. A mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) can be formulated accordingly. The processing equipments described in this model include: the multi-contaminant water-using and wastewater-treatment units, the direct and indirect heat exchangers, and the multi-stream mixers and splitters. An effective solution strategy has also been developed to identify the global or near-global optimum. Two examples are presented in this paper to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of the proposed methodology.
