Integrated Sustainability Assessment for the Chemical Processes

The goal of this work is to focus on the development of holistic methodology to enable the evaluation, and comparison of process sustainability in an integrated system. This methodology is based on material and energy flows, process parameters, and process configuration. It uses a set of indices, including inherent safety, potential environmental impacts, and economics aspects. These indices are used as a basis for determining an integrated index for sustainability assessment of process alternatives under investigation. The multi-criteria decision analysis procedure is presented to conduct the integrated assessment based on qualitative and quantitative analysis. As a case study, ethanol production process is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology.
