Comparative Study of Microwave-Assisted Decolorization of Methyl Orange Solution Catalyzed by Cr(III) and Cr(VI)
Chromium compounds can catalyze the degradation of methyl orange (MO) with hydrogen peroxide irradiate by microwave. Comparative investigation was carried out with Cr(III)-H2O2 and Cr(VI)-H2O2 systems respectively. Results showed that Cr(VI) had broader appropriate pH value range than that of Cr(III). The catalysis route is Cr(VI)→Cr(III) → Cr(IV)→Cr(V)→Cr(VI) and the Cr(III) is more susceptible to pH value variation than Cr(VI). Chromium compounds in composite wastewater can be used as catalysts for degradation of persistent organic pollutants.
