Optimal Production and Distribution of Multi-Site Chemical Plants and Its Real-World Applications

This paper addresses two important points in industrial optimization problems; development of mathematical optimization model and its user-friendly application. First, a multi-plant and multi-product chemical production problem is introduced to show a realistic example of the industrial supply chain management problem in which production and transportation decisions are coupled. A mathematical programming model, Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, is developed to give simultaneous decisions of production and transportation in multi-site chemical plants. Second, a user interface system is developed to maximize the utilization of the MILP model and its solutions. The interface system consists of three parts; data input, data output, and solver execution so that a general user can utilize the model to obtain optimized SCM solutions with various scenarios. The interface system is based on Excel data sheet with Visual Basic Application macro which controls and executes GAMS/CPLEX solver. Since the system enables the user to control input and output data of the GAMS on Excel, it is not necessary for the user to open or modify any source code of the model.
