OPTIMAL ASSIGNMENT OF PLANT OPERATORS FOR EFFECTIVE EDUCATION BY ON-THE-JOB TRAINING
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is indispensable to effectively raise the skill level of unskilled plant operators. We formulated a nonlinear mixed integer programming problem, the solution to which gives the optimal assignment of plant operators to any given shift in terms of facilitating OJT over a given period. The programming problem includes terms representing the necessary conditions for OJT to be possible and for the safe and steady operation of the plant. We solved the problem by decomposing it into outer and inner problems. The solution allows management to assign operators to shifts so that OJT quickly improves semiskilled and unskilled operators’ skills. We also solved the problem using two heuristic methods. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed optimization approaches by applying them to a case study.
