An approach to environmental impact reduction in chemical reaction processes

An approach for reducing environmental impact in chemical reaction processes is presented. The primary elements of the approach include potential environmental impact (PEI)scheme and PEI increment for a reaction. A PEI scheme is constructed based on the corresponding reaction scheme to visualize the transformation relationships among different types of PEI, and are used as a tool to aid in identifying the sources of environmental impacts and generating alternatives for eliminating or reduction the impacts. The PEI increment, denoted by PEI Δ , for a certain reaction, is defined as ΔPEI=∑kskMkψk Where sk is the stoichiometric coefficient of species k in units of mol k/mole of reaction, Mk is the molecular weight of chemical k and Ψk is the overall PEI of chemical k in units of PEI/ kg of chemical k. The PEI increment for a reaction shows the magnitude of increment in PEI when this reaction proceeds by one mole of reaction, and can be used to express the sensitivity of the generation of PEI to a certain reaction in a complex reaction system. The greater the absolute value of PEI Δ , the more sensitive the generation of PEI is to this reaction. Therefore, reactions with greater absolute value of PEI Δ should be paid more attention due to they influence the generation of PEI more significantly. With the aid of PEI scheme and PEI increment as well as some heuristics and suchlike, sources of each impact category in reaction processes can be identified, and environmental impact reduction alternatives can be derived. Environmental performance of each alternative is evaluated by doing a quantitative PEI balance. The application of the approach is illustrated using a case study.
