TOOL FOR FAULT TREE ANALYSIS USING MICROSOFT EXCEL

Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) is used in process industries to estimate the frequencies and consequences of specific incidents. One of the tools for QRA which is the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) can be utilized to estimate the probability of hazardous accidents. FTA provides a quantitative assessment which is particularly valuable in risk management. Manual conventional fault tree construction can be time consuming and prone to human error. Although abundant computerized fault trees have been made available, the software is costly and cannot be used together with other process analysis software such as HYSIS. The tools in common software; Microsoft Excel was being exploited in developing the Fault Tree Analysis for Quantitative Risk Assessment. The program developed was able to perform the probability of risk calculations that can be tedious and time consuming. The project work involves the development of coding in Excel using the Visual Basic Application (VBA) which is embedded in Excel. The program developed was able to construct fault trees according to user input and calculate the probability of the Top Event. A database management system was also developed in the Excel spreadsheet. Failure rate data was obtained from Lees, (1996) Loss Prevention in the Process Industries; Offshore Reliability Data Bank (OREDA) and Guidelines for Process Equipment Reliability Data with Data Tables. A Fault Tree Analysis was constructed for a case study on an offshore platform. The program that was developed using Microsoft Excel was utilized to construct the fault tree and conduct the probability calculations for the specific case study.
