FIRE AND EXPLOSION INDEX FOR INHERENT SAFER DESIGN OPTIONS
Inherent safety concept has introduced a proactive approach to eliminate, prevent or reduce hazard rather than applying the hazard control measure. This concept is most effective if implemented in the early process plant design stage. It also provides greater reliability, lower capital and operating costs, as well as potential risk. Many previous studies have highlighted the importance of inherently safer design and suggested potential indices to be used but not many has utilized the indices for the application of inherent safety concept in process design. Therefore, this paper reported the potential application of inherent safety concept in process design by utilising the Dow Fire and Explosion Index (Dow FEI). A computer program for the Dow FEI was developed using Microsoft Excel and was used as a tool for the application of inherent safety concept in process design. The Dow FEI program was validated against the established data and the application of this program for inherently safer design was done for an ammonia reactor as a case study. The study shows the potential of using the developed Dow FEI program for inherently safer design especially to evaluate level of hazards at an early stage of design. Further options are provided in the Dow FEI program of which are intended to reduce or eliminate the hazards by applying the principles of inherent safety.
