Thermoeconomic Optimization of Helix Angle for Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers with Helical Baffles
The helix angle of helical baffles is not only the important parameters to determine its structure, but also the main parameters which affect the performance of helical baffled heat exchanger. While helix angle is reduced, both the pressure drop and the heat transfer coefficient will improve, but the heat transfer will be much more utility meaning at the same pressure drop. In the literature, heat transfer effectiveness is better between 25° and 40°. There is no precise criterion for the determination of helix angle. In this study, thermoeconomic analysis is used to determine the optimum helix angle of helical baffles. The results of this example are then used to demonstrate how the optimum helix angle is determined precisely. The results showed that smaller helix angles, less than 25°, offered higher heat transfer thermoeconomy. Finally, the results are compared to those obtained by classical approaches.
