Multi-Objective Optimization in process design considering safety, environment and economic impact
This paper presents an integrated methodology for incorporating environmental factors and safety parameters into a separation process design and optimization at the early stages of design. This methodology performed an environmental-friendly and inherently safer design and operation based on technical and business performance criteria, compared with most traditional approaches involving the use of procedural controls and additional prevention devices at the end of design as an after-thought to design. At the same time, the Dow fire and explosion index (F&EI) as a safety metric in the design and optimization framework is proposed to generate the mathematical expression of F&EI as a function of decision variables. Genetic Algorithm based on NSGA-Ⅱ programmed for multi-objective problems are used to obtain a set of alternatives or efficient solutions for the decisive variables. As a case study, a separation system of ethylene oxide production units is discussed to illustrate the effectiveness of this design. methodology
