Introduction of Abnormal Situation Management Systems
Abnormal situation management (ASM) system is an effective measure to improve the safety of petrochemical plants. As an additional protection layer of chemical plants besides emergency shut-down system, an ASM system involves timely detecting an abnormal situation, diagnosing its causal origins, predicting the possible consequences and providing appropriate mitigation action instructions. With ASM system, the ability of operators to deal with abnormal situation can be enhanced effectively. This paper introduces the characteristics and components of an ASM system. Finally, event tree analysis of a high-temperature reaction system is used as a case study to illustrate the importance of the ASM system in improving safety.
