PLS-based Iterative Control of a Simulated Moving Bed

The simulated moving bed (SMB) process has become a key separation technology in the areas of pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries thanks to its high productivity and short process development time. However, the process is complex rather sensitive to disturbances. The conventional feedback control cannot be directly applied to the continuous periodic SMB process. In this paper, a partial least squares (PLS) based control strategy for SMB is proposed. The MIMO SMB process is transformed into a system of the parallel uni-variate regression process. Subsequently, the conventional controller can be separately and directly applied to each SISO control loop under the PLS modeling structure. Because of aging of the process and unmeasured disturbances, the iterative control of cycle-to-cycle feedback control is also proposed. The realization of the proposed method is assessed on a virtual eight column SMB unit, which are in accord with the theoretical conclusion.
