SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF R/C PRECAST FRAME BUILDINGS: DESIGN, SCOPE AND LESSONS OF A STATE-OF-ART EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION

The paper compiles the results of the experimental activity that was carried out in the framework of the Precast EC8 research proiect, co-funded by the European Commission, in which nine European partner institutions where involved, together with Tongji University, Shanghai, PRC. The project, spanning over four years, was recently successfully concluded: the research activity was focused on the seismic behavior of one-storey precast reinforced concrete structure for industrial facilities, which make up a consistent part in the building stock all over several European and overseas countries. Through a series of pseudodynamic and cyclic tests was performed on two full-scale prototypes, experimental assessment was pursued of the adequacy of the current seismic design approach enforced by Eurocode 8, normally accepted for cast-in-place r/c structures, when applied to the design of precast structures. The interpretation of collected data allowed more light to be cast on currently open problems peculiar to the design of precast r/c structures in seismic regions. In particular the paper presents some remarks on three issues: the diaphragm behavior of the roof-deck (validity and limitations of the assumptions, correct dimensioning of connections), the reliable and correct choice of the behavior (reduction) factor for precast frame structures (and the needs in terms of dimensioning and structural detailing in order to guarantee the hypothesized ductility resources) and. finally, the influence of cladding panels on the seismic response.
