A RESEARCH ON THE LS-DYNA HOURGLASS FORMULATIONS

Seven hourglass formulations are available in LS- DYNA, and patch tests are separately applied to Belytschko-Tsay shell element and solid element with different hourglass formulations. The following conclusion can be drawn: 1. Flanagan-Belytschko stiffness form in hourglass control types has an advantage over Flanagan-Belytschko viscous form for shell element; 2. Hourglass formulations with exact volume integration can pass the patch test, but others can not, including the popular default LS-DYNA viscous form of hourglass control.
