Neural-Based Theory of Temporal and Spatial Sensations of the Visual Field

The typical temporal sensation, a missing fundamental phenomenon of the flickering light, is described by the temporal factor extracted from the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the signal in the similar manner to the pitch of the complex tone. On the other hand, the visual spatial sensations known as a texture include contrast, regularity and coarseness. These sensations are described by the factor extranced from the ACF of the gray level. And, the subjectively preferred conditions are found in relation to the temporal and spatial factors. It is found that the brain activity well corresponds to the subjective preference in relation to the temporal factor of the visual field. With the change of temporal factors, the alpha wave on the left cerebral hemisphere is more sig nificant. The proposed theory cooperating both the temporal and spatial values may be applied to the realization of an excellent visual environment. Moreover, such a new concept of the temporal design may be applied to the design of the architecture and the environment.
