Investigation into Acoustics of Chinese National Music Halls

This paper involves two main works about the acoustics of Chinese national music halls. Firstly, the sound power levels of some of the major traditional musical instruments were measured. Based on the measured results, a new loudness criterion, Lpf,the mean forte sound pressure level of tutti-sound, was suggested to describe the loudness in a national music hall. Also, a formula for calculating Lpf was presented. Moreover, some site surveys are performed for the comparison between the predicted and the measured Lpf values, and corresponding subjective loudness evaluations were carried out. Secondly, by using the auralization technique, some subjective preference tests of the suitable reverberation time and loudness for traditional national music performances were taken in the Architectural Acoustics Laboratory of South China University of Technology.
